Problem of containment of large masses of liquid metal by automatically controlled magnetic field

V. F. Gubarev - E. S. Paslavskii

Abstract
Based on the analysis of a system for containment of a plane layer of liquid metal the required energy expenditures are estimated. Optimum relations for the system parameters corresponding to the least energy losses are determined depending on the thickness of the contained metal layer. The investigations are based on the equations of hydrodynamic equilibrium in a variable magnetic field and the heat-balance equations. Since the investigated configuration is unstable, for the purpose of stabilization it is proposed to use the distributed systems of automatic control of magnetic fields.
