Plasma acceleration by an external azimuthal magnetic field

Yu. N. Denisov - A. A. Kulandin - V. S. Kirilkin

Abstract
One of the ways of improving the performance of an axially symmetric plasma accelerator is to use an azimuthal field produced by an external magnetic system. The theoretical efficiency of such an accelerator is determined, and the results are compared with those from published studies on the theoretical efficiency of a Hall accelerator. It is found that a comparatively high efficiency can be attained in an accelerator with an azimuthal magnetic field at field strengths less than those in a Hall accelerator.
