Effective viscosity of magnetic fluid emulsions

V. A. Chernobai - Yu. P. Yarmol'chik

Abstract
A method of preparation of magnetic fluid emulsions (MFE) has been presented. The formation of MFE structures in a gap between the cylinders in an external uniform magnetic field has been considered. We have studied experimentally the influence of magnetic field on MFE effective viscosity increase. It has been found that the effective viscosity of MFE depends strongly on the ratio of phase and media viscosities. It has been shown that the increase of MFE effective viscosity in a magnetic field and its decrease when rising the shear rate are caused by tyxotropic processes, deformation and breakup of the magnetic fluid drops affected by magnetic and hydrodynamic forces. MFE has been established to be a visco-plastic Bingham liquid. Figs 8, refs 8.
