PREFACE

P. Frick

Chairman of RMHD-2012

Abstract
The Russian Conference on Magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD-2012) held at the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (June 17-21, 2013, Perm, Russia) was the first in the post-Soviet time scientific meeting covering almost all branches of magnetohydrodynamics. Despite strong positions of Russian researchers in the field of magnetohydrodynamics, the Russian MHD community finds itself today in a paradoxical situation of the absence of a regular MHD conference. This can be partly explained by the fact that up to 1991 the Soviet MHD community had been strongly consolidated by the triennial MHD meetings held in Riga. The RMHD-2012 has paved the way for a revival of the Russian MHD Community and generated considerable interest among Russian scientists and Russian speaking researchers living abroad. The Conference was attended by about 150 scientists from Russia leading research institutions as well as from the scientific centers of Latvia, the United States and Great Britain, Ukraine, Israel, and Germany. The success of the Conference has encouraged the participants to make a decision that the Conference should be held on a regular basis and become international (with English as a working language).
