Abstract
The paper is concerned with the study of liquid metal stirring in a laboratory gallium model of the aluminum melting furnace bath exposed to a travelling magnetic field generated by a system of parallel linear inductors located under the bath bottom. Experiments with gallium demonstrate that the vertical temperature gradient decreases sharply when the stirring velocity of the liquid metal reaches a threshold value. In mathematical modelling, flow patterns and temperature fields in a physical model of the bath under the action of magnetohydrodynamic stirring are calculated. Simulation data are compared with the results of physical experiments. Figs 7, Refs 9.
