Abstract
Preheating of metals in induction crucible furnaces is often a long-term process characterized by a large energy consumption. Numerical simulation could be a useful tool for the process optimization. The electromagnetic field distribution, velocity distribution and the shape of the free surface in a crucible of given geometry are affected by various parameters of the system. Quite reasonable results are obtained by means of a simple two-dimensional numerical model validated by experiments. Tables 2, Figs 6, Refs 7.
